By 1:30pm on Sunday, 16 hours after starting the project, the Spec Boxster was ready for delivery to our safefy cage builder TC Design. We were scheduled to leave it with Tony at TC Design for the next 4 days. Tony finished the build in 3 days. The cage was a work of art incorporating in some very clever design to maximize room inside the cabin.

Here are a few pictures of TC Design's beautiful work....

The Maiden Voyage

After getting the car back from TC Design on a Wednesday - 5 days after the start of the build - we used Thursday to set the windshield back in the car (it had been removed for the cage installation) and to install the safety equipment such as 6 point belts and mount the fire extinguisher. On Friday we took the car in for an alignment and loaded it on the trailer for an AX on Saturday morning with PCA. We were done!

So how did the car do? Out of 100+ cars we placed the car in the top 5 overall. Even though the car had a stock 2.5 liter motor, the suspension changes plus the reduced weight had transformed the car into a seriously quick car. And all this on the car's first time out.

After the initial build we went back in for more weight reduction which I will document in another thread. So far, the car and class has been great fun and I have no regrets with my decision to get into 986 Spec.

Awesome build and post!

Maybe you are covering it that other thread you mentioned but I am very curious as to the weights of various parts/systems as I (much more) slowly migrate from street car to track car; did you or anyone document that before?

Hey,

What sort of funds are we talking about needed to build a car like yours? And the operationg costs?

After purchase of the doner car that is.

I am just curious and have been comparing different spec racer's initial cost and operating costs in order to determine the right fit for me within the next year. I am mostly concerned with operationg costs (keeping under $5000-6000 per year including entry fees) and keeping the build/purchase of a race car under $15,000.

Thanks,
Chris

I think it's easy to find a donor for < 10k. DIY build costs are about 12k. Running costs are about 1500 weekend (give or take).

very nice cage. How much would a cage like that cost me to have installed?
