NASA Prototype Rules Change Requests – Summary

Approved for 2018

1. Mandate bump stops front and rear ~$75
Approved, reliability. Front bump stops are now allowed to help keep nose/splitter from bottoming. To eliminate the need to test for different tracks and conditions, the spec stops will be mandated on all cars.

6. Allow side window vents ~ $250
Approved, driver comfort. Allows better venting and ability for “point-bys”.

7. Increase minimum weight
Approved, parity – Changed to 1775lbs. Reduces the number of competitors who are unable to meet the minimum weight.

8. Allow air intake scoop ~$500
Approved. Will improve top speed performance.

13. Allow modification of canopy to make removal easier
Approved, serviceability. NASA tech bulletin to be created for details.

14. Allow any manufacturer for master cylinder (maintain same size) ~ $250
Approved, reliability. Any brand with similar list price (<$150ea) is permitted.

15. Open fuel pump to any manufacturer ~ $150 to $250
Approved, reliability Permit Bosch 044, AEM 50-1005 or Holly 12-935.

17. Fix front spring rate at 600lbs
Approved, cost containment. Following the intended path of decreasing complexity of suspension setup and testing.

18. Fix rear spring rates at 2 choices (1400/1600)
Approved, cost containment. Following the intended path of decreasing complexity of suspension setup and testing.

19. Allow wheel speed sensors on all corners ~ $75 per corner
Approved, driver development. Allow for driver development and aid in setting bias bar.

20. Specify (or leave open) where extra splitter support cables may attach.
Approved, reliability. NASA tech bulletin to be created for clarification.

21. Allow addition of Elan oil cooler kit. ~ $600
Approved, reliability. Help with cooling during high temperature and/or high elevation events. Elan to create tech bulletin.

Not Approved for 2018

2. Allow any size master cylinder ~ $250
We need data showing changing master size would help bring the balance bar ratio more neutral.

3. Allow 1800lbs rear springs ~ $150
Class focus is to limit # of choices, no proven data showing need for stiffer springs than 1600

4. Allow any rear suspension pickup points - no material costs
Class focus is to limit amount of adjustments to caster/camber/toe/rake.

5. Replace water temp sensor with head temp sensor ~ $1500
No significant need provided with request. Rule will be rewritten to allow coolant pressure sensor or extra temp sensor to be hooked to AiM.

9. Allow front high downforce splitter ~ $7500
Not within cost containment intention of class

10. Allow front splitter ramps ~$1000
Not within cost containment intention of class

11. Allow rear diffuser (see #9)
Not within cost containment intention of class

12. Allow alternate wheels
Not approved per agreement with mfg and supplier

16. Allow RARB kit ~$1800
Not within cost containment intention of class

I need ideas to add 50 lbs of ballast. The two lugs on the frame just in front of the seat tub does not have much room to add a lot of weights.

I have used the bosses for the heel stop in front of pedals also. The weight made a great heel stop also. Dave put lead shot mounted under his seat also.

Yep. I took lead shot and poured it into the two cavities under the seat. Then adhesive and rivets to secure flat aluminum sheet over the top.

The two bosses in front of the seat are good up to 65lbs per Elan.

Drill two holes and boom! Just double check length. I did this for 35 pound weights when I ran ST2.

Now I have an excuse to eat well; to make spec weight.

Does anybody have a picture of a side window vent?
