Hi,
I am new to the Autocross scene. I have a 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth which I understand is classified as
Fiat 500 Abarth (1.4L T)('12-'13) (USA)---NXE* 2590 lbs (5-25-12)

I also understand that I have to add 7 points as this is a Turbo car (denoted by the asterisk in the classification). Is this right?

I am looking to add a TMC Motorsport 'tuning box' (http://www.tmcmotorsport.com/Default.aspx).
This sits between the ECU and two of the sensors (Turbo boost and intake manifold) and modifies the signal inputs to the ECU.
I am trying to understand where in the classification rules this comes.
I think it falls under the No-Points Modifications section
45) Non- OEM/BTM sensors or alteration of sensor inputs (such as non-programmable MAF or MAP voltage “clamps”)

Can anybody confirm this or would it fall under
3) Aftermarket computer system (any non-OEM/BTM “stand-alone” or “piggyback”): +3 naturally aspirated, +10 forced induction

Thank you very much,

Trevor

The * is +7 added to the base class because NASA says so.

On top of that, you add +5 because your vehicle is turbo.

IMO, that modification would fall under the No-Points Modifications section you mentioned. I can't confirm this because I have no authority.

SO, you start in E and +12. That means you only have +7 points to play with before you bump up to D.

Thanks.
+12 - that's harsh!

Judging the classing system before you've ever competed is harsh.

Email greg(at)nasa(dash)tt(dot)com about your "tuning box"

your car may be actually intended to compete in the higher class, but was given the lower classification to get a running head start at the cars classed above it.

I have competed three times now.
Hard to beat those E classified Miatas!

At three events it's still too driver dependent imho. This stuff takes years to get good at.

That said, your car has ~50whp over a Miata but will never turn as well. Use the right pedal more?

Thanks everyone for the responses.
I have emailed Greg as suggested.

I know a lot of work needs to go into the driver for sure ;-) Just trying to find out what mods I can make to the car to compensate without getting bumped into the next class

Looking forward to 2013!
